Cearra is a College Freshman!

I arrived at Penn State waaayyyy back when with not much more than a comforter, a few suitcases of clothes, and an illegal mini hot pot contraption. Yesterday Cearra and Sha claimed their place at Mary Baldwin by filling their dorm room with a TV, a DVD player, two laptops, a fan, a free-standing jewelry cabinet, two printers/scanners/copiers, two refrigerators, warehouse size packages of Easy Mac, granola bars and bottled water, and enough clothes, shoes, and beauty products to open a boutique! I think they will be unpacking and organizing for weeks to come (although I have no doubt they will make everything fit and it will all look good).

We had a great time settling them in - getting to know Sha's family, talking with Cearra's academic adviser, getting her books for the first semester (10 books at over $300 for 4 classes - yikes!), enjoying a good dinner at the school's cafeteria, and meeting some of her fellow freshman and hall mates. Owen was a great goodwill ambassador as he very much enjoyed walking into dorm rooms and soliciting high-fives from the other students.

At the end of the day we all hugged and shed a few tears, then watched as Cearra and Sha walked off to their first dorm meeting. I'm so proud and happy for Cearra. I know she is ready for this adventure; I know she will shine. I hope she loves each moment of these days and continues to grow as a woman, a student, a friend, and a leader. And I hope she remembers that no matter how far from "home" she is, she is always encircled with love.

Cute Pics - Cute "Owen-isms"

I often call Beamer "Bea-mie", so Owen calls her "Mee-mee".

After his earlier aversion, he now loves shoes - his own and ours. If I leave mine in the kitchen or family room he will bring them to me and hold them in front of my feet until I put them on (and then he'll clap). He even turns them the correct way and knows the right from the left.

Owen loves to give kisses to his stuffed animals - and have them kiss each other. He usually accompanies all this with a loud, smacking "mmm-waw" sound.

The other night he passed gas; then looked at me, smiled and said "stinky!"

Lucky for me, he doesn't mind having his nails trimmed. In fact, after I'm done he likes to take the clippers (safely closed) and do his own "touch-up".

Owen is the high-five king of Maryland. Everywhere we go, he walks up to people, little hand extended in a gesture of hope and expectation. Most folks smile and oblige him - after all how can you resist that face??

Saturday at the Zoo

Today was a beautiful day for the zoo! We saw many beautiful birds (and one very strange looking one with a rock-like crown on his head), big turtles, a gorgeous lioness who snarled at all the kids, playful monkeys, and slithering snakes. Owen's favorites once again were the deer, who he hand fed and petted like they were his house kitties.

Alison - the last picture is just for you!

For Grandmother

Today we lay to rest Mary Cornelius, Bob's grandmother. A woman of quiet dignity and grace for whom family was life's greatest accomplishment and joy.

Along with "Bud" she raised four terrific children - Harry, Pam, Kathie and Jeff - and took delight in her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took special care to make her home welcoming and warm, and loved to cook for us all.

Beautiful, faithful and elegant, I remember her always with a gentle smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She will be missed, but her legacy goes on.

My Lucky Day

There are friends who make you laugh; friends who guard your secrets; friends who listen to you cry. There are friends to shop with, eat with, gossip with, email with.

And if you're really lucky, a friend does all that AND drags a super stash of dark chocolate Twix and Kazakh family matryoshka dolls halfway around the world for you!

Thanks Alison! You're the best!
