Your Night Will Become Like the Noonday

No, this is not just a pretty necklace ...

These bracelets are more than an arm party ...

And these bags have the power to carry far greater things than lipstick.

Each of these pieces is changing someone's life. This is Noonday Collection.

By purchasing Noonday jewelry and accessories, you are helping to lift families out of poverty, allowing widowed mothers to care for their children, and giving fathers the means to provide food and clothing and shelter. Noonday partners with artisan colonies in some of the most economically challenged areas of the world to encourage, support and teach these proud people how to build their businesses and make their futures brighter.

And because adoption is close to Noonday founder's heart, trunk show hostesses (like me) can choose to donate 10% of their show's sale total to a family currently pursuing adoption. I'm thrilled to be blessing a family hoping to bring home two children from the Congo.

You too can make an impact. Share Noonday's mission. "Like" them on Facebook. Visit my online trunk show this week at Jodi's Trunk Show, and if you see something you like - for yourself or someone else - go ahead and click "purchase" (be sure to choose our ambassador's name, Michelle Petenbrink and enter my name when checking out so our adoptive family gets full credit!). Thank you!

Ripple

"Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end."
- Scott Adams

When I was newly diagnosed with breast cancer, and still reeling with shock and fear, a young woman I'd never met took time out of her day to stop by my office, and by sharing her story of recovery, gifted me a kindness that I consider an honor to carry on and spread. And so I am deeply touched not only by Mary Kay's contributions, but even more so by Cearra's personal decision to add to it and carry it a step further by reaching out to very real women with a small act of kindness and beauty.

Here's your chance to get in on the ripple:

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am using my business to give Kisses for A Cure! I am so proud to say that Mary Kay Cosmetics donates millions of dollars each year to the cause through the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. Like most of you, I know someone who has been affected by cancer, and I love that in my business is I can give back too.

This October, Mary Kay is donating the proceeds from sales of our New Limited Edition Inspiring and Possibilities Lip Glosses to Breast Cancer Research.

I have chosen to take it further ... I'm asking my friends, family, and customers to purchase one or both specialty Lip Glosses (one for $14 or two for $28). You can then choose to keep the gloss and of course the proceeds go to research. Or, you can donate the gloss and I will personally deliver them to my local Cancer Treatment Center in Westminster, MD with a note that reads:

"You've been given a Kiss for the Cure! The proceeds from this gloss go to Cancer Research. The gloss is for you! May you feel as beautiful as we know you are. Sincerely, The (Name) Family of (City, State)"

Plus, on top of your purchase/donation and Mary Kay's donation, I will personally donate $2 from my profit for each special edition lip gloss sold to the American Cancer Society!

Please feel free to share this opportunity to bring a smile to someone's face with your friends and family. Let's all get involved and make a difference in the world and in someone else's life! Please call or email me with any questions or if you'd like to order. You may also order by visiting my personal website at www.marykay.com/cmechem.

Thank you!
Cearra

Ready, Set, BLING!

It's Party Time!

In joint effort with the Stella & Dot Super Saturday event in the Hamptons this weekend, net proceed sales of the Tribute Bracelet (pictured below) between July 27th-29th will support the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Stella & Dot will have a booth at the event and all net proceeds sold will be donated as well.

This is an important charity to me: a close friend of my mother-in-law's passed away from ovarian cancer; one of my sweet friends Lyndsie is a young survivor (yeah!); and one of my dearest friends just had surgery on Monday to remove an ovarian tumor, which thankfully turned out to be benign. But in the difficult week between discovery of it, blood work, and the "all clear", she and I both were reminded of the scary statistics involving ovarian cancer - early detection is difficult, it can strike a woman of any age, and survival is a challenge. Hopefully more awareness and more donations will lead to a cure!

Ooooh, I'm getting these!!

In support of this event - and because I really do love Stella & Dot jewelry - I decided to host an online party through my friend and stylist, Chris Corcoran. You can purchase a bracelet - or any of their other fabulous jewelry - by simply visiting my online party here. A few clicks and you'll have your beautifully packaged new bauble(s) in about a week. Stop by anytime between now and Sunday night!

Go ahead! Treat yourself! It's a great opportunity to look good and do good!

Get Ready to Bling!

I'm teaming up with Stella & Dot stylist (and sorority sister!) Chris Corcoran to host an online trunk show.

Also very cool - beyond the fact that all Stella & Dot jewelry is super pretty, on-trend, and high quality -  during my party, all net proceeds from the sale of that beautiful Tribute bracelet shown above will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Win-win!

So go ahead and check out Stella & Dot now, make up your wish list, then come back July 27th and place your order!

"Dear Jodi (Mom)"

Back when I first started dating Bob, some wondered if I knew "what I was getting myself into"; a man who had been married, a father with a daughter. Honestly I didn't mull it over too much; I was in love, and Cearra was a three-year old bundle of sweetness and beauty added to my world.

Being a stepmother wasn't always easy. While I was very lucky that Cearra's mother always allowed me to play a role in C's life, I was also always conscientious of the fact that I wasn't Cearra's mom, and I never wanted to do or say anything to upset that balance. That can make a relationship tricky ... just how do you discipline, offer advice, console, etc., a child in the "right" way when you are in fact a bit of a third-wheel of a parent? There were times I was frustrated; times I was elated; moments that made my heart soar; and many times when I bit my tongue and just hung on.

I always tried to do my best, to put Cearra's happiness and well-being first in every decision. Over the years it got as easy as breathing - because after all I loved Cearra as "my own" from the very start.

It has been an amazing journey watching her grow up, and I don't know what my life would have been without her. The joy has always far outweighed any struggles. As she prepares to graduate from college and embark on the next stage of her life, I am thrilled to be by her side and look forward to experiencing how our relationship continues to grow through all the moments she has ahead.

This Mother's Day Cearra sent me a beautiful card, with a sentiment thanking me for my love and support, signing it from both her and Owen. And then she wrote that "a gift for you has been purchased from Bead for Life to help support other mothers in Uganda do for their child what you have done for Owen and I".

And that - the card and her thoughts, plus the compassion and awareness Cearra demonstrated by choosing that very special gift - well, that is more precious to me than any material thing. It means the world to me. Because while I might not have known all those years ago what I was getting myself into, I absolutely know now how I am blessed.

I love you Cearra and Owen. You both mean everything to me, and I am so proud and honored to be your mom, mommy, step mom, and bonus mom!

WILW - It's A Long and Happy One Today!

I'm loving that last Saturday, I was sitting next to my husband, watching our son cheer for his favorite monster trucks with a look of awe and excitement on his face, while our daughter sat on the other side holding hands with a boy (well, young man) who has brought much happiness back into her life. Last Saturday was also the day 14 years ago that a surgeon called to tell me I had breast cancer.

So what I'm especially loving today is that I didn't even realize this "anniversary" until a doctor's visit (for an unrelated, non-scary issue) on Monday. And I will never stop loving the fact that I was lucky to have great doctors to treat me, wonderful family and friends to support me, and an almighty God to watch over me and give me the opportunity to go on to live an amazing life filled with joy and good things. And you know what? I AM a warrior!

Onward to some other things I'm loving today (check out this list of other WILWers too!) ...

A fuzzy new bud on my favorite Bradford pear tree! I nursed this baby to life from a little stick that came in the mail from the Arbor Day Foundation and now it's glorious!

Oh these earrings ... the juicy colors, yummy stones, almost good enough to eat!

Even though I know it's kind of wrong, I'm loving Owen's laughter over this little duck that, um, "lays candy eggs". I mean come on, he thinks it's hysterical and hearing his hysterical laugh is priceless!

I'm loving my slightly early birthday present from my mom and dad - my new chubby little dolphin bead! Doesn't he look adorable nestled up to my July babies birthday bead? I think it's so special too that they gave it to me since they are also the ones who made my dream of swimming with dolphins come true. Thank you Mom and Dad!

I'm loving Owen's first love note! He came home with this in his book bag last Thursday. I asked him if Ryley gave these to anyone else, he said no. And while he didn't seem particularly wowed by the drawing of then holding hands, or the little sticker hearts, I will keep this forever!!

I'm loving these new Tom's shoes for Spring. The little toggle detail in the back - awesome. Even more awesome - buy a pair of Tom's shoes, and the company gives a pair of shoes to a child in need, Win-win, right? Yep, go here.

Today, I've saved the best for last, 'cause I am beyond loving that Cearra has been invited to join Sigma Beta Delta!! She did it! She set this as a goal and she worked her tail off to get there. We are so very proud of her and her academic achievements at Mary Baldwin. Cearra, you shine!

Just One More Gift to Give

Owen and I were headed to school this morning, playing his current favorite game of "who would you root for .... the Chargers or the horseshoes" (insert any variation of NFL teams here; we run through them all, and as a true Baltimore fan that's what he calls the professional football team from Indianapolis), when "Do They Know It's Christmas" came on the radio.

You remember ... a tune performed by a group of British and Irish superstars assembled by Bob Geldorf in 1984, sales of the record were donated to famine relief in Ethiopia. I sang along in the car, joining Bono in sweet harmony, before realizing with a sinking heart that nothing has really changed. In some places, it's gotten even worse.

Twenty-seven years out and people the world over still suffer from hunger everyday.  Parents worry that they won't be able to feed their children, and babies cry themselves to sleep with an empty belly. One recent study showed that 1 in 6 Americans don't have access to enough food. Across the country, nearly 5.5 million children live in families that have lost homes to foreclosures and 8 million children live in families where at least one parent has lost a job.

You read that right ... 1 in 6 people are slowly starving. In our own country. Let it sink in a bit.

Try to imagine your children asking for food with tears in their eyes, and not being able to give them something because the money has run out for the week and the fridge is empty. Think about lying in bed at night, stomach cramping, not knowing where your family's next meal will come from, or how you will afford to buy milk or bread. Picture if you were a teen trying to get good grades in school, but you had to fight the constant distraction of not eating breakfast yet again.

It makes me pause and question the commercial side of this season. Perhaps I should forget the fancy Christmas cards, stocking stuffers, toys, and clothes, and send every cent to someone in need. Yet here's the rub - I really like giving presents and I enjoy all the wrappings that come with Christmas! Bob works very hard all year, I budget every month, and neither of us spends a lot of money on ourselves so that we can afford to give our friends and family gifts at Christmas. We do not go overboard, in fact I'm sure our gift pile would look spare to many, but we do like to celebrate. We realize it is a privilege to be able to give Cearra the latest phone or iPod, and to indulge Owen's love of John Deere and Angry Birds, and we appreciate our blessings. Most of all, I truly love finding just the "right" thing for someone, and watching their faces light up when they tear off the wrapping paper. And of course, I like getting presents too - who doesn't?

So I am not going to be giving all that up entirely, but for me it's also about finding a balance and in doing so remembering the "Christ" message of the season.

I recognize that at times it feels overwhelming and hopeless - the sheer number of people around the globe who need a hand; the heartbreaking images of children living in poverty; orphans with no homes or families; elderly without proper care or a warm home. But when I feel like sticking my head in the sand, I'm always reminded of the starfish story - that while there are many, many starfish that need help, we can each make a difference to at least one.

I'm pretty positive that most - if not all - of you have made charitable giving part of your holiday traditions. Whether it's providing Christmas for a family in need or throwing change in the Salvation Army bucket each time you pass by, your efforts do make a difference. We support several organizations here and in Kazakhstan, and we will continue to do so. This year, we will do more (sorry Bob, there goes one of your presents).

Please consider making one of your gifts this year to a family you will never meet. Feeding America will help provide food to an estimated 14 million children this year. Your gift of $45 will feed a family of four for a month. If that's too much right now, consider a smaller gift - it's so easy - you can contribute $10 right now to Feeding America by texting MEAL to 50555 and replying "YES".

You won't see the smiles on the faces of grateful parents when they open a box of nutritious food and prepare dinner for their children. You won't hear the kids contented sighs when their little stomachs are finally full for the first time in months. But I promise you, you will lay down tonight and feel joy in your heart that today you helped change a life.

WILW

Happy Wednesday Morning! Today, I'm loving that I'm class Mom at Owen's kindergarten! We are going to be focusing on the Wampanoag Indians, and the teacher assures me I will have lots to do helping the kiddos make vests, drums, and headpieces - can't wait!

Maybe it's the sugar hangover from helping my Angry Bird with his Halloween candy, but I'm loving these cupcakes my incredibly talented sister made for a recent birthday party!

I'm also loving this year's opportunity to spread a little Christmas cheer to orphans in Kazakhstan. Two Hearts for Hope is going to provide, with your support, a special gift to each child at Arca Village in Talgar, KZ. Please click here to learn more about this wonderful mission and how for only $20 you can make a difference in a child's life.

I'm always loving silver, sparkle and bright green! This photo is one of my inspirations for my mantle decor this season. I've started to pull things together - bought a huge wreath today that transferred tiny bits of glitter EVERYWHERE! - and will be sure to post a pic in a future WILW!

While I still like the china Bob and I registered for 15 years ago, I think it's time for something new! I've been wanting white plates for a long time - I think it's fun to mix and match with different holiday/color pieces - and I'm loving the Emma dinnerware from Pottery Barn. And yes, we still have a while to go until Christmas, but I'm so excited that my Mom and Dad just ordered me new place settings as my big gift this year!

That's all for this week! Have a wonderful day thinking of all the things in your life you are thankful for - because that's the real message in WILW, isn't it?

For Japan

Question for you ... when was the last time you heard something on the news about relief and recovery efforts in Japan? I can't remember either. Media coverage has all but vanished. But of course the suffering continues for thousands in Japan as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.

As promised, I've researched which agencies are still working in Japan and having a positive impact, and I've chosen the Red Cross for their organization, goals and long-term plans for aid to the Japanese people.

Together we raised $620 through the sale of flower pins, which I will be donating to the Red Cross. And while that may seem like a small amount compared to the billions that will ultimately be needed to rebuild Japan, I think it's important to do what you can, where you can, and when you can. And we did.

Thank you for your support, generosity and enthusiasm!

From the American Red Cross:

"Three months on from the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan’s northeast coastline on March 11, 2011, the Red Cross remains focused on helping to improve living conditions for many of the 98,000 people remaining in evacuation centers - most of which are situated in the hardest hit prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate. Japanese Red Cross employees and volunteers are providing a range of services for the evacuees and plans are underway to install washing machines, water tanks for hand washing, privacy partitions and televisions.

“The physical and mental health of evacuees is of major concern, particularly where people are facing prolonged stays in centers,” said Alex Mahoney, disaster management expert with the American Red Cross. “Longer-term solutions to find more appropriate accommodation for people who have lost their homes are urgently needed.”

The Red Cross is supporting families moving into temporary housing units provided by the government, helping to restore a sense of normality in their lives. Home appliance packages, comprised of a washing machine, rice cooker, refrigerator, hot water dispenser, microwave and television, will be provided to more than 90,000 families with support from the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross is also increasing the number of caregivers and psychological support teams working in evacuation centers and nursing homes to address mental health issues, post traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety amongst survivors.

With major damage to health and care services, another priority is to support medical facilities, such as hospitals, clinics and care homes. In Ishinomaki, the Red Cross is planning to boost local health services by building and equipping temporary medical facilities. Specially-equipped beds are also being donated to existing nursing homes across three prefectures where many elderly people require special care."

WILW

First, I am loving all your comments on WILW! I love that my little weekly post has inspired you to, as Pam so beautifully wrote, "view life with all it's blessings with a sharper sense".

One of the character traits I most admire and strive for is gratitude. We all sometimes find ourselves in a glum mood, or feeling a bit down. Some days it seems that things just aren't going our way. I am trying to be positive in the face of anything that comes my way, and I've found that taking a few moments daily to recognize the places, people and things (be they big or little) that I'm loving helps me do so.

So thanks for playing along ... let's get started!

I'm loving all the flowers I've planted in our four flower beds over the past few days! To be honest I haven't liked gardening in the past, but this year it feels like creating something beautiful more than drudgery. Oh, and I'm loving that gorgeous Bradford pear tree in the pic, especially since I grew it myself from a little twig!

I'm loving that my wonderful cousin Kim is playing along! And p.s., those clean dogs of hers are adorable - Pam, she's another Westie parent! Now, Kim once commented they she preferred to be behind a camera (although I don't know why because she is beautiful!), so for her shout-out here I'm posting a picture of one of my favorite pieces of her jewelry. You can visit her online shop at The Beaded Dragonfly to see more of her gorgeous work.

I'm loving that one of my favorite charities, Two Hearts for Hope, is now going to be helping orphans in Russia as well as Kazakhstan! They offer an opportunity to impact a child's life in a very real and immediate way. A link to their site is always on the side bar over there, and right now for a mere $10 you can bring a little joy to an orphans life!

I'm loving that Cearra is in Auckland, New Zealand! I'm so happy that she has this opportunity to travel and experience new things. Looking forward to hearing all her stories and seeing her pictures when she gets home.

I'm loving how sweet our Owen (err, Sean) is ... yesterday I told him I wasn't feeling good, and he said I could have one of his "feel betters" because he has 12 of them. How cute is that?!

Looking forward to reading what you are loving this Wednesday! Have a positive one!

What I'm Loving Wednesday

Welcome back to What I'm Loving Wednesday. Feel free to play along by leaving a comment! OK, let's go ...

I'm really loving that we've already raised $440 for the people of Japan! I'm going to make and sell the flower pins until the end of June, at which time I'll send all the monies to a charity that is still doing good work there.

I'm loving working on creating a new look for the blog and your nice comments. And yes, I'm writing up the bee story!

I'm loving Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara! My all-time favorite mascara is Dior DiorShow, but since my budget does not generally include almost $25 for make-up, I find the MK version a very nice alternative.

If you are interested in trying Mary Kay make-up or skin care, my Aunt Cathy would be happy to help you - and I promise she won't bug you about hosting a party or becoming a consultant (unless of course you want to!). Visit her site here.

I'm loving that after 2 years, "Baby" no longer bolts off the deck the minute I open the slider, and that last week she actually ate a little while I sat outside. One of these days I will pet her!

I'm loving Owen's cute new cleats (in the smallest size they make) and watching all his fellow t-ball players at their first "academy" last night. So sweet and funny!

I'm loving watching our lilies "spring" to life after a long, cold winter!

And as always I'm loving every second with our little man - even if it means playing combine demolition derby for the 100th time!

That's it for this week; have a great day!

A Flower for Japan

Yesterday was one of those days and my mood was reflecting it ...

Everything I picked up, I dropped. I put things down and then couldn't remember where I had left them. I tripped over my own feet - several times. The laundry literally whacked me in the head (truly, but please don't ask how). Bob called and said he had to leave in a few hours for DC Cook to do some testing for them (yes, that's a nuclear plant and no, I wasn't at all worried about his safety).

To sum up, I was being a crank. A grumbler. A whiner.

And then I thought of the people of Japan, and I straightened up. Lord, forgive me for being ungrateful.

I guess we all do that though. Have days where we momentarily forget our blessings in the face of frustration. It's sad that other's pain is sometimes what it takes to make us remember how lucky we are, but perhaps that's why bad things happen ... so that we don't overlook the good.

I'm certain that like me, the Japanese people have been on your mind and in your hearts constantly since last Friday. You may be wondering how to help, or perhaps you have already made a donation to rescue efforts.

I've always noted that when disaster first strikes, people are incredibly generous with their efforts and contributions. As time passes, other events necessarily take over the news, but the clean-up and aid efforts in areas affected (think New Orleans, Haiti, etc.) continues, as does the need for financial support.

So I had an idea. I created the felt pin pictured below, and I'm going to "sell" them for $10 each. At the end of June, I will donate all proceeds raised - and personally match the total (up to $200) - to an organization that is still working in Japan at that time, most likely one like Save the Children.

About the pin: Hand-crafted from felt (so each one will be slightly different), about 2.5 inches in diameter. Each layer is cut then sewn in place. I chose white and red to represent the Japanese flag as well as the courage of the Japanese people. The green leaf represents regrowth and hope. A black rhinestone centers the flower (if you would prefer a white rhinestone please specify when ordering).

By purchasing and wearing a pin, you will be reminding yourself and others of the ongoing need to help a devastated country. I plan to pin my to a ribbon and tie it around my purse handle; I think it would also look fantastic on a spring jacket.

Leave me a comment or email me at jkmechem@yahoo.com to order a pin. Please feel free to share with anyone you think may be interested ... I hope to have sore fingers from cutting and sewing!

What I'm Loving Wednesday

I'm loving that Cearra is home for Spring Break! Watching her and Owen goof around is such a joy!

I'm loving that I have been blessed with such amazing friends and family! My birthday on Sunday was made special with cards, calls, texts, facebook messages, and the incredible decorations, cake, and gorgeous gift that my friend Missy and her kiddos surprised me with!

I'm loving decorating for Spring by freshening up the fireplace mantel with yellows, whites, and bright greens!

I'm loving this beautiful bracelet and the fact that 100% of the purchase price is donated to this organization which provides grants to people wanting to adopt!

I'm loving Remy's love for her big ol' catnip ball!

Have a wonderful Wednesday y'all!

What I'm Loving Wednesday

First, today and everyday I'm loving being a mom! I'm loving too that last week my mom and my mother-in-law played along! I'm really enjoying giving thought to the little (and big) things that make my world a happier place, and I think it's a good exercise in graditude. So here we go ...

I'm loving that after 8 years we are finally getting the basement cleared out and cleaned up (complete with work-out area). Hooray for the trifecta of old "treasures" - Goodwill, consignment, and bulk trash pick-up.

I have a love/hate realtionship with foundation (love because I have horrible skin so I won't leave home without it; hate any heavy, cakey feeling), which is why I'm loving L'Oreal's new foundation. It's soft and light and goes on like silk, but still does a decent job covering up what you don't want the world to see.

I'm loving the adorable, preppy Polo shirt I got for Riley; and the so cute Crew Cuts (J.Crew) cardigan I chose for Kenzie; and the colorful, stylish Children's Place skirt I picked for Samantha. And I'm loving that I got all three for $2.52!

I'm loving that I just earned another free Snapfish photo book by collecting Coke points. My diet coke habit does has its benefits!

I'm loving that I have a family so ready and willing to support important causes with their time, efforts and donations. If Autisum research touches your heart as it does ours, please consider making a contribution to my sister-in-law here.
