Cearra's Spring Break

Some college students travel to warm climates and party like rock stars during Spring Break. Cearra comes to still snowy Maryland and ...

makes pinecone birdfeeders,

has whipped cream food fights,

and partakes in finger-painting and pre-school craft time with a 3-year old brother who adores her.

Somehow, I don't think she's missing out on a thing.

The Post with Lots of Pictures

Been a while since my last post; to make up for it I'm treating you now to a photo bonanza - after all I know the real draw here is cute pics of Owen and Cearra!

Owen decided one morning that underwear on his head was hysterical. And yes, thankfully, they were a just-out-of-the-drawer-clean pair.

A more typical picture - his cheesy face.

During one of our snowstorms Cearra and Owen set up a home office in the family room (O had to have his computer when he saw C set up hers) ...

and Beamer and Remy found an equally comfy place in our bed.

We made Cearra a picture frame for Valentine's Day. He picked the paint color and the embellishments by himself. Cee-Cee said it made her smile - mission accomplished.

My little valentine always makes me smile too. As do good friends who craft you gifts (like this cute banner from Kim) ...

and my favorite flowers from my dad!

Once we got a break in the snow, Aunt Cathy and Uncle Rich came to visit, bringing an adorable Owen sized stool that Rich crafted (he is so talented), treating us to lunch, and taking a nap.

Back in January I let Owen pick a few t-shirts he liked from Gymboree ("Gymbucks" time!); when they arrived he tried one on and promptly started to jam by playing his guitar and singing "hey now, you're a rock star ....". I think we'll be seeing a lot of this t-shirt come warm weather.

As many of you know, Remy is the upstairs cat. Has been since she arrived. But one day a week or so ago, while doing something in the kitchen, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, and there she was padding 'round the hallway corner! She headed into the family room and made herself comfortable (well, at least until Beamer and Sadie discovered her presence downstairs then things got a little dicey and Remy ended up hiding behind a curtain for a while).

Here's Owen helping her smile. Good thing she's a sweet cat.

We'll leave you for now with the reminder to stay safe and always wear eye protection!

The Other Big One

*** This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. Should the Baltimore/DC area receive more than 1 inch of snow for the remainder of this winter you will hear loud screaming. In the event of another storm, please send a fleet of Saint Bernards equipped with barrels of (good) scotch and satchels of (even better) dark chocolate to the Westminster location on your screen. BEEEEPPPPPP ***

It stared snowing again Tuesday afternoon and didn't stop for the next 24+ hours. Bob shoveled off the deck as we were worried about the weight from the last storm (and to try to keep the shelter we built for a neighborhood stray cat accessible - that's the small opening you see in the picture above); within an hour it looked about the same as pre-shovel. Our county pulled the plows off the roads due to low visibility - we were really and truly housebound.

Owen and I decided sugar cookies would be a good idea ...

Yum - they were!

Thursday morning dawned clear and bright. We all layered up and headed outside. Owen loves the snow - eating it, throwing it, sliding on it - but it was so deep he (and Bob and I) got quite the workout trying to walk through it. I've heard that Westminster got at least 50" between this snow and the last one less than a week ago!

We created a walking path and sled run established down one of our small hills and Owen had a great time swishing down the track.

Still, I think it's safe to say we are all ready for Spring!

Who Dat?

Memory - and pride - runs deep 'round here. It's become a ritual to touch the toe of the big statue of Johnny Unitas before each game at Ravens stadium. When Payton and his teammates come to town the scoreboard reads simply "Indy" (never the "C" word) and the public address system announces "the professional football team from Indianapolis".

So you know we weren't going to be routing for any team with a horseshoe on their helmet in the Super Bowl. Not to mention that we actually like the Saints and the city of New Orleans, and Cearra and I pretty much always cheer for the underdog. We dug out some Mardi Gras beads and the foam fingers Bob and I got back in 2004 when we attended a Saints game during a visit to the Big Easy and got ready for the game.

Although the storm of the century put a damper on our party attendance we were thrilled to have some neighbors and good friends join us for chili and cheering. And we were all pretty darn happy with the final score.

Celebrate your hearts out New Orleans - you sure do deserve it.

Play-doh Playtime

I know a lot of moms who would disagree, but I love Play-doh. The creative possibilities, the squish factor, the smell. Yes, little pieces of it have a tendency to end up on the floor and all over the table (not to mention under your nails), but once it's dry it's easy to just sweep it all up.

Owen got an awesome Play-doh kitchen play set from Uncle Todd, Aunt Maria and Hannah for Christmas, so today while we were waiting for the water department to show (and by the way, just who are the lucky folks who get the appointments at the beginning of the 4 hour time slots?? It's sure never me!), we broke it out and got cooking.

A well-balanced meal of steak, potatoes with gravy and green beans,

followed by a chocolate cupcake for dessert.

Yum - looks good enough to eat!

(and another Play-doh positive - it's non-toxic!)
