Happy O Is Back Again

The other night as I lay in bed unable to sleep, the chorus of a popular song kept running through my head … in Russian. Yep, we’ve officially been here too long.

I promised myself not to turn this into the “diaper diaries”, but as I mentioned Owen was having some serious intestinal issues that were pretty rough on all of us. After a few days of only rice cereal and formula didn’t help we asked Rada to call Dr. Victoria . She thought the only thing wrong with him was that we had fed him jarred carrots instead of the boiled cabbage and meat she suggested, and prescribed him medicine, capsules that we broke open and mixed with some water three times a day.

We are happy to report that the situation seems to finally be back to normal. Just in time too as we woke up this morning to no running water for the third day in a row (it has since thankfully come on) and the kind of clean up involved in previous days would have been difficult to say the least. And no, living without running water is not at all fun, particularly for me, someone who won’t even go camping unless we stay in a cabin with indoor plumbing and a shower (Audrey stop laughing!).

Owen has been mostly back to happy baby lately, although he does get cranky if we are a little late or slow with the food. He sure does like to eat and I’m looking forward to his medical exam in Almaty (required before leaving the country) to see how much he weighs now. We are still tinkering a bit with his schedule and think we’ve found a winner – more frequent, shorter naps and a slightly later bedtime.

Our social life is pretty slow at the moment as it’s been very cold and snowy for a few days. But we do manage to get out occasionally - Bob and Sean went on a walk around town to take pictures of some of the monuments (shown is a World War II memorial) and I met Maureen, Jenny, Joey, Diane (a newbie from Alexandria !), Bill and Jill for an afternoon of shopping at the Tsum store. The Tsum store is really just a bunch of small kiosks and stores that sell everything from auto parts to fur coats. There are stores for appliances, sporting goods, books, stationary, wigs, chandeliers, cosmetics, food, curtains, shoes, china and glassware … in short, if you need it, you can probably find it here. It might not be all that nice or even look like it belongs in this decade, but you can find it.

We do a lot of reading to pass the time; I’ve finished two books that I highly recommend: “The Boleyn Inheritance” by Philippa Gregory (Mom, I think you’d very much enjoy; it’s about the court of King Henry IV from three women’s point of view) and “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson. The latter is just what the title suggests; it’s an explanation of everything from how the Universe works to what an atom does. It’s written by a non-scientist and is therefore accessible for everyone. Every five pages I was saying “Bob, listen to this …” Amazing stuff, great book. Thanks to Uncle Bud, Owen has some interesting bedtime reading too.

Hope everyone is well. Your comments, thoughts and prayers keep us going – but we are really ready to come home. Two weeks to go!

JoBobO,

Two weeks and counting! Yes, water is a nice little luxury...when you get home you'll either let your's run just because you can or you'll be super-conservative as a result of your experience over there! Glad that Owen is feeling better and settling into a schedule.

I spoke to some of our old neighbors - The Shumakes and The Utterbacks - and updated them on your adventure in Kaz. Both families send their best wishes. Of course, I have referred them to the blogs ("Finding" and "Bringing Home")so that they can try to get caught up from the very beginning.

All is well here. We now consider 40-degree weather "like spring" and welcome the rain to wash away the dirty snow and slush that is left from the most recent storm.

Keep hanging in there and keep writing. Love the more frequent updates just as much as you love the comments!

Love,
courtnay

Howdie from Haymarket!

Glad to hear that Owen is back into a routine. Not having any water...I can't imagine.

We love the updates, I've been keeping my parents updated, since mom doesn't use email, and they don't have DSL to bring up the blog with the pictures. we're working on getting them better outfitted.

I keep showing Tyus pictures of Owen, saying here's a new buddy for him to meet. I do hope that we'll be able to get together when you all return. Ty is start to chat some which keeps us guessing most of the time, but he seems so proud of himself. His latest thing is that he's playing his harmonica that he got for christmas, its hysterical!

The snow is melting here, thankfully. LJ and Julian would love to see all the snow you all are getting, they'd be doing the "no school dance" for sure..LOL! I'm figuring that we're not out of the woods just yet.

Just know we're all counting the down the days with you. keep the updates coming, i check every day to see how you all are doing. take care -

Is that book Bob is reading to Owen the History of the Pittsburgh Steeler Super Bowl Victories? It certainly wouldn't be the History of Baltimore Raven Super Bowl Victories. That would be more like a short story or a children's book! Glad to hear The Big O is happy again. Won't be too long before Hannah is thouroughly confused. She's just getting used to pronouncing orphanage and Kaz. Been texting Cearra a lot and she is doing well. We love you guys and can't wait for you guys to get back. Todd

Hey Guys,

Today's opening line post along with Todd comments had me rolling on the floor with laughter!

So glad my newest buddy O is back in Happy Land! I feel for you with the water problems. I guess it is hard to keep water running in zero degree temps though. Good news is you are getting out of there soon! Bad new is I had to buy Twix Bars!!

Hey Todd you do make me laugh, the next time your in Westminster, stop by for a beer on the deck. I have a picture I would like to show you. It's a picture of six (6) Steeler's and one (1) Raven. It's a picture of Ben getting sacked by Bart Scott with five of his own next to him!!

Stay warm, miss you!

Hi Jodi! Just checking in again - I love all the updates. The intestinal stories are great - they bring back memories of Miss Kylie spouting all over Dan and the Moscow doctor, grossssss!! She got over it after a week or so - but unfortunately not in time for the 11 hour flight back to NYC. This too shall pass, literally! Owen is sooo cute, those cheeks are the best! And those big eyes, so cute, so cute! And we still have our English major in common - I love Phillipa Gregory books too - if you can get a copy of The Glass Castle it's my new favorite book of all time. I am so happy for your whole family!! Lots of Love, Brette
