Introducing Mr. Cranky

For reasons known only to Owen (and maybe his teeth), our sweet, agreeable, “easy” baby has turned into Mr. Cranky. We don’t see any little white Chiclets emerging from his gums but the other signs seem to be there … the previously oft-mentioned drool, the shoving of anything and everything into his mouth (why doesn’t someone make teething rings the same texture as fingers since that is obviously the preferred thing to bite?), ear rubbing, crying and general fussiness – see picture. And of course out of the all the toys and diversions we offered, the plastic wipes bag was the only thing to halt his tears for a good fifteen minutes.

The good news from Kokshetau is that we are getting out of here two days early, March 2nd instead of March 4th (although our flight home is still scheduled for March 7th). We don’t know the reason behind the change, although we heard something about the flight schedule changing for spring. In winter, the Yak flies only on Wednesday and Sunday; and yes, it has snowed here for three days straight and the high today is zero, but I think March 1st is the official start of spring. Whatever the reason we are happy to have more time in Almaty. Because it’s a much bigger city we will be able to take Owen out in public, Mad Murphy’s Irish Pub has awesome food, and the Ramstore is better than the Westminster Mall. Hopefully by then our happy baby will be back!

P.S. Uncle Todd – Owen says thank you for getting him a Terrible Towel; he’s always happy to have a new drool rag.

Hi from Wisconsin,

Dad is winding up his trip to see his granddaughters today. Lot's of fun and laughs. Special request from Kris for some of those dark chocolate Twix, Jo. Since Maureen reports that you have scarfed all the ones there, perhaps you can locate some extra ones while in Almaty.

Everyone is doing well here and back in Pa.. We are eagerly awaiting the passing of the next 17 days. How's June 2nd looking for the family and friends party??

Hope all continues to go well with Owen despite the cranky baby times. Everyone here says, HI!. Love to you all. MOM

Jodi & Bob,

So happy to hear you are getting out two days earlier than expected. So sorry to hear O is a fuss bucket at times. He is exercising his lungs which is a good thing!!

Don't worry, Sadie will teach him the house rules, and lay the law down to him. All will be fine.

Hang in there, give fuss bucket kisses for me.

Hi from Haymarket,
Sorry to hear that Owen has hit a rough patch, but as quickly as it started it will become a memory..hang in there.
We've been digging out of ice for a week now, which means no school for the kids, since last monday (2/13). We're all climbing the walls and I'm grateful that school will be back in tomorrow and the temp if finally rising into the 50's this week.
I'm happy to hear that you'll be making your way back to Almaty a few days earlier. My guess, is that the time will pass quicker once you all will be able to get out together.
Take care.

Hannah prayed for "Little Cousing Baby Owen" to have big fun last night. I guess her prayer and his teething must be in different time zones! Tell Owen he can use his terrible towel for drool, I had mine between my teeth several times this season. Just texted Cearra at work. She says, "tell them I said love them". We love you to! Have fun!!!

Greetings from West Chester,

We so enjoy the updates on the blog! It will be great that you can get to Almaty sooner, your days of cabin fever will soon be over. It will be fun to take Owen outside and to stores. Everything is so new to him. Wait till he gets home, you'll have so much fun seeing things through his eyes!

Your girls kept us company when your mom and I were at your place last weekend. Beamer was the first to sit in my lap, Sadie apparently didn't think my lap was comfortable enough but she sat beside me. Remmie slept with me both nights, purred the whole night and Ava, well she did let me pet her and she walked over and around me but never curled up. You would be so proud, we didn't get lost while we were down.

Glad to hear that Owen will have a "terrible towel"!

Love and hugs to all of you.

Hey there! Owen's just trying to keep you guys on your toes!...and continue to prove that no matter what great toys you buy for babies, they always choose the containers...
Stay warm (we're attempting the same!)and keep it up with the great pictures!

Hey all!!! He mav be cranky, but I still cannot get over how incredibly cute Owen is!! And I still think he looks a lot like both of you. People used to tell me how much I looked like my dad! It was just a sign to me that I was meant to be with him! And I think the same holds true for Owen, he is truly meant to be with you!! Love you guys--hang in there for those last few days!!!

Always great to read your updates, I just love them. Sorry to hear Owen is fussy, but it seems no sooner do those tiny little teeth appear then they are ready to wiggle out. So enjoy each moment fussy, happy, serious... they are all to be treasured. Wish I were there to 'rock' him. I don't know if that ever really helped but it was something I loved doing!
So glad to hear you will be leaving for the 'big city' a bit earlier than planned. At least your trip home won't be quite so long(all at one time).
Love you all,
Mom

The sooner the better, I am getting more excited!!!! as well as u guys. Can't wait to see my new nephew!! If worse comes to worse give him a dog bone, believe it or not they have the flavor of beef or chicken. Joey used to chew on lincoln logs. But believe it or not the babies cannot bite through them but it mite satisfy the erge to bite anything else.

A co-worker and I think that you might want to have them take a look at Owens ears. It could be a sign of an ear infection. The only time I knew Jenna had one was when she was running a fever. Some babies don’t run fevers.

I have to agree with the other posts, he still looks so cute even though he's not happy.

I'm excited about your trip to the city. It sounds a little less quaint. I do love the picture of you and the baby fanny pack. You stepped right into Mom mode.

On a TV note: Amazing race has started. Rob and Amber are back at it trying to win. They finished 1st. All of the pit stops are elimination. The coal miner and wife are back. There are a couple of "guy couples" that just make me laugh.

Keep warm. Love to all three of you. Oh and don't forget the VODKA...(hehe)
