The Kaz Crawl






We woke to another blizzard – snow blowing sideways for dramatic effect – which cleared in time for the Mechems to visit the Powers (Sean, Maureen and James). They are in an apartment a few blocks away so we bundled up the boy and braved the chill. Owen and James were both very good, engaging in a little friendly wrestling and playing with their toys. Maureen and Sean were going to treat us to a dinner of french fries, chicken nuggets and fish sticks; unfortunately their gas cylinder ran out halfway through cooking and a replacement couldn’t be delivered until the next day. By this time in the trip we all are sufficiently “Kazified” to laugh it off and eat dried peach and raisin pie for dinner instead.

Owen continues to be in good health and is making developmental gains everyday. It amazes us to see the things he does after being with us just short of two weeks. He can now sit on his own for several minutes, he loves to stand and even “dances” a bit, and he really seems to be enjoying investigating his toys and his world. But he’s still not showing any real interest in crawling; why bother when you can scoot yourself around on your back - the Kaz Crawl! We try to tell him that if he keeps it up the bald spot on the back of his head will never have a chance to fill in and the girls will tease him, but so far, it doesn’t seem to matter to him. Especially since pretty girls like Rada come by to give him lots of attention no matter how his hair looks (hmmm, maybe it’s really the Nittany Lion paw print on his pants that she likes).

Our little one also had his first babysitter this week. Luba is a wonderful woman who works with our agency and is the housecleaner at the cottage; she also does our laundry. She loves kids – as soon as she walked in she went right for Owen and started speaking Russian to him and he seemed perfectly content with her. Bob and I went to dinner with Rada at Kokshetau’s sole sports bar. It was nice and rather new looking inside with several large screen TVs all showing soccer. Rada tried to teach us a bit about the rules of the game, but if Owen decides to play I think I’ll have to get a crash course from Drew because I still don’t understand what constitutes getting a yellow card! It was nice to get out and have a good meal, but it was even nicer to come back to the apartment and give Owen big hugs and kisses.

We are now heading into our last week in Kokshetau!

Author’s note: On the last post I referenced Henry and inadvertently put the wrong Roman numeral (was never very good at them!) – it should be Henry the 8th; you know, the one who killed his wives!!

Hopefully you have seen the last of the blizzards. Spring is to come early here according the Puxatauny Phil. Of course, he didn't specify how early!

We have so enjoyed the blog but will enjoy having all of you home safely even more. Although we will miss the blog updates.

It wasn't too long ago that you were counting the days until your trip over to Kaz and now you are counting down the days until you leave. It was all worth it because you are bringing home Owen!

10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1..Oh yes we are the count down period, four weeks and five days down, just ten more days till you will be home!!

I didn't know Rada was so young and pretty, she is Britney Spears Kaz style! Well, actually Rada looks better than Britney, wait till you get home and hear/see what Britney did this time, all right I'll tell you, she shaved her freaking head. Some much has happened in Hollywood since you been gone. Good thing you get People magazine!!

Hang in there, the best is right around the corner!

Impressed that you've alredy gotten Owen through his first babysitter! Good for you for getting out a bit!

You have such amazing stories to tell Owen as he grows up. Your experience, not to mention his early life story, is truly unique!

Absolutely looking forward to your return! Keep braving the snow (there just might be some here when you get home)!

Every entry on your blog brings you closer to 'home'. Sure am missing you and so glad your days are filled with so many treasured moments. With this entry - I especially love the picture of Owen and James... it seems to tell a story of its own...I think it would make a good children's book.
Just like Sherry's countdown, I think there are many (countdowns) just for you across the country.

The time for your return is drawing closer and everyone who has been following your journey is getting so excited!! I have so enjoyed your comments and especially all the pictures. You are having an adventure that will remain with you the rest of your lives. I am so happy and proud. WiId horses couldn't keep Dad and me away from Dulles on the 7th!!! Wow, you are so close. I’m excited to meet Owen. What a wonderful little man. I noticed a few things. The picture with him and James almost looks like he is learning to drive in DC, a little more pizzazz with the arm. And Bob what is on that face….. Young Elvis would never go for that. I’m glad Rada is in Kaz. We more mature women would have a problem with such a good looking young woman around.
Team Strojny is planning a trip in April to see Team Mechem. I know things will be a little crazy when you get home. After you get settled, let me know a good date for a visit. I’m sure you are going to have people in and out for a while.
Jo, I want you to know that I’m so proud of you. You have almost roughed it to the point of being ready for real camping. Just say the word and I’ll break out the tents and fishing poles. I think camping will suit Owen just fine. Jenna is ready to have a fishing partner. Get that Spiderman pole ready.
I would like to thank you for putting the Henry song in my head…..”I’m Henry the 8th I am, Henry the 8th I am I am…” You get my point.
